Why We Do Things We Shouldn't

April 21, 2019

Ask yourself why you do what you do.  Why do you eat or drink too much or use drugs? Why do you go from one bad relationship to the next? Why do you buy things you don't need?

Many people say they do what they have to in order to relax, because they deserve it, to make them feel better, etc. But the real reason for the bad choices we make is deeper than that—and simpler.

We make bad choices and engage in wrong behavior when we don’t feel loved and accepted. It’s just that simple. When we truly feel loved and accepted, we are unstoppable.

When we know someone has our back, we can step out into uncomfortable territory because if we come limping home in failure, we know we’ll get sympathy instead of ridicule. When we reach out and try, we usually won’t get failure but an incremental step toward success.

Imagine a life where you knew you were so loved, accepted, and even celebrated that you felt unstoppable. What would you try then? What would you be able to accomplish?

Well, here’s some good news. You are loved like that. The Creator of the Universe loves you. He knew you and approved of you when you were in your mother’s womb. You didn’t have to do anything or pass any test to earn that love. He just loves you. Close your eyes, take a deep breath, and think about that for a moment.

Maybe you are like me, raised by atheists who said that there is no God and that anyone who believes in such a thing is a fool. Or maybe you decided on your own that there is no God. Regardless of where your current beliefs originated, suspend disbelief and skepticism for a moment, and imagine living as though you’re adored. If you’re like me, it’s a stretch.

What do you have to lose? What harm could come from choosing to believe that this planet and everything on it didn’t just randomly come together? What harm could possibly come from choosing to believe that there is a God who loves you and even calls himself, “love?” Be honest, doesn’t it just make you feel a little better to think that the sweetest emotion there is, love, is actual the force of the universe?

The whole notion is God is beyond my understanding, but that doesn’t stop me from deciding to believe. If God could be proven, no faith would be required. If God could be definitively disproven, we would all be despairing humans floating pointlessly through life. The reality is, though, that there are people (I’m delighted to now be one of them) who is legitimately joyful. This faith thing is working for me!

When you fully grasp that you are loved, it will change everything for you because you’ll be changed. You’ll do things differently because you’ll be a loved person in the world rather than an unloved person searching for love and medicating the pain of being unloved.

Focus on the love. It’s waiting for you. It’ll change everything for you.
